Jouko Lindstedt

Jouko Lindstedt (* 1955 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish linguist and professor at the University of Helsinki . He is a member of the Esperanto Academy and was nominated Esperantist of the Year in 2000.

Statement about the number of Esperanto speakers

Lindstedt estimated the number in 1996 as follows:

• 1,000 speak esperanto as their mother tongue.
• 10,000 speak it at an almost native level.
• 100,000 have the ability to communicate.
• 1,000,000 know some elements.

Lindstedt describes these estimates as imprecise. As an example, he gives: if you only name a few hundred native speakers, this might be too low, but there would not be several thousand native speakers.
