Joyce Fairbairn

Joyce Fairbairn (born November 6, 1939 in Lethbridge ) is a Canadian politician .

She studied journalism at Carleton University until 1961 , where she met and married Michael Gillan. She worked as a journalist in the 1960s . From 1970 to 1984 she was Pierre Trudeau's assistant . From 1984 she was Senator for Alberta for the Liberal Party of Canada . Following the Canadian general election in 1993 , she came under Jean Chrétien in the 26th Canadian cabinet . There she was parliamentary group leader of the ruling party in the Senate until 1997 and was also a minister with a special mandate on literacy for Canada. Although she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in early 2012 , she remained a senator for a few months.

In 2015 she was honored as a member of the Order of Canada . In 2018 a new school in Lethbridge was named after her.
