The Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge (also known as Bridge Number Two ) is a bridge over the Rio Grande that connects the cities of Laredo , Texas , United States and Nuevo Laredo , Tamaulipas , Mexico . It is one of four road bridges that connect the states of Mexico and the USA via the Rio Grande in the Laredo / Nuevo Laredo area and belong to the Laredo International Bridge System of the City of Laredo.

history

The bridge was opened in 1976 to relieve the Gateway to the Americas Bridge , which runs a few hundred meters west over the Rio Grande. The bridge was named after the Mexican President Benito Juárez and the US President Abraham Lincoln . The construction of the bridge was largely driven by Peter Arguindegui Jr. , who was a member of the Laredo City Council.

The International Bridge Ceremony, also known as the "Abrazo Ceremony", takes place on the bridge every year. The ceremony is part of the celebrations for the anniversary of George Washington's birthday . In 2016, Jeh Johnson was there to attend the ceremony.

The Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge is an eight-lane box girder bridge . It is 307 meters long and 22 meters wide. The bridge may only be used by buses and non-commercial vehicles.
