Juan Barjola

Juan Barjola (born September 19, 1919 in Torre de Miguel Sesmero , Badajoz Province , Extremadura region , † December 21, 2004 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter .

Life

Barjola studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Badajoz before moving to the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid in 1943 . In 1957 he had his first own exhibition there in the Galería Abril. From 1960 he traveled through Europe and got to know original works by Picasso , Braque and Ensor . Between 1968 and 1975 he taught colors and composition at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

He was considered one of the most important painters of Spanish contemporary art . His expressionist paintings have been shown in solo exhibitions around the world, including Venice, New York and Tokyo. There has been a museum in Gijón since 1988, which is called Museo Juan Barjola . More than 100 works by Barjola can be seen there. His works are also presented in the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo in Badajoz .

Barjola died on December 21, 2004 at the age of 85 in a Madrid hospital as a result of a fall while painting.
