Juan Bautista Comes , in Catalan Joan Baptista Comes , (* around 1582 in Valencia ; † January 5, 1643 ibid) was a Spanish conductor and composer from the Catalan cultural sector.

Live and act

Comes received his training at the Cathedral of Valencia , where he was a choirboy between 1594 and 1596. During this time Juan Ginés Pérez , Ambrosio Cotes and Narciso Leysa worked there and ensured his education. In 1602 he was mentioned as Kapellmeister of the Church of San Pedro in Sueca, in 1603 at the Cathedral of Lérida (today Lleida ). From 1608 he was assistant to the Kapellmeister at the Real Colegio Seminario del Corpus Christi in Valencia, before he was appointed Kapellmeister at the cathedral in 1613 and was ordained a priest in 1615. In 1619 he accepted an offer from Madrid and worked there as the second court conductor, but returned to his hometown in 1629, where he was director of the Real Colegio del Corpus Christi until 1632. After that, his path led him back to his old position as Kapellmeister of the cathedral, which he held until his death.

He created almost exclusively sacred music in the tradition of the Spanish High Renaissance and was unaffected by developments in other musical centers of his time.
