Juan Carlos Pita Alvariza (* 1951 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician and diplomat .

Juan Carlos Pita, who has a doctorate and is a doctor by profession, held a management position both in the Uruguayan Association of Medical Students ( Asociación de Estudiantes de Medicina ) and in the Union of University Students of Uruguay ( Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios del Uruguay ). During the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay, he actively fought it, was arrested and brought to justice.

As the representative of the Montevideo Department in the 42nd to 45th legislative period (LP), from February 15, 1985 to February 14, 2005, Pita held a titular mandate as a member of the Cámara de Representantes . He also sat in the 43rd legislative period from September 13, 1994 to September 28, 1994 in the Cámara de Senadores . After he initially assumed the mandate as a representative of the Partido Nacional ( Sublema ACF W) in the 42nd legislative period , he switched to the Lema of the Frente Amplio during this electoral period . There he represented the voters until the next election for the Partido Demócrata Cristiano . In the 43rd LP he belonged within the Frente Amplio to the Sublema Unidad y Pluralismo frenteamplita 77 and in the 44th LP Unidad y Pluralismo frenteamplita 90. He exercised the mandate of the 45th LP for the alliance Partido Encuentro Progresista / Frente Amplio. During his parliamentary work he was a member of the Commission for Labor Legislation ("Comisión de Legislación del Trabajo"), the committee of inquiry into the murder of Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz and Zelmar Michelini ("Comisión Investigadora de los asesinatos de Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz y Zelmar Michelini") and the Commission for the amnesty of political prisoners ("Comisión sobre Aministía para los Presos Políticos"). Until 1993 he was chairman of the minority committee ("Comisión Especial sobre Minoridad"). He was also a member of the Commission for International Affairs for 14 years, where he was chairman in 2002. Pita was the Uruguayan Ambassador to Chile from 2005 to 2010 . On January 10, 2011, he was appointed head of the embassy in Spain . In 2012 he took over the post of Uruguayan Ambassador to the USA, which had been vacant since July 13, 2012 .

Pita is married to Mariella Mora and has four daughters.
