Juan Carlos María Wasmosy Monti (born December 15, 1938 in Asunción ) is a Paraguayan politician and businessman. He was President of Paraguay from August 15, 1993 to August 15, 1998 , after winning the country's first free democratic elections on May 9, 1993.

Life

Wasmosy was born in Asunción and became an engineer. In this capacity he became head of the Paraguayan consortium working on the Itaipú dam. During this project he amassed much of his fortune.

At the age of 54, Wasmosy, a conservative politician and member of the Colorado Party since 1973 , which had made Paraguay's president since 1947, took the oath of office on August 15, 1993, becoming Paraguay's first democratically elected president since the founding of the Nation on May 15, 1811. Wasmosy implemented the reforms begun by his predecessor Rodríguez only hesitantly or not at all. Towards the end of his tenure, his policy was seen as a failure and he became increasingly unpopular.

At the end of his term of office Wasmosy became a senator for life without voting rights according to the Paraguayan constitution. He also became a member of the Carter Center .
