Juan García Margallo (born July 12, 1839 in Montánchez , † October 28, 1893 in Melilla ) was military governor of Melilla from 1891 to 1893.

Life

Margallo entered the Colegio de Infanteria as a cadet in 1855 . As an officer, he was part of the Spanish expeditionary forces in Africa. In 1866 he was promoted to captain. In the armed conflicts that followed the revolution of 1886, he served on the side of the republican warring parties against the Carlist . In 1890 he was promoted to the rank of general. In 1891 he was given command of the Melilla garrison.

In February 1893 it was decided to build a bunker in the cemetery and the mosque of the community of Sidi Uariax in Melilla. The local community leaders sent a petition to Margallo advising against building the bunker in the cemetery. As in 1859, the petition's request was rejected. On September 28 and 29, 1893, the fortified position of the Spaniards was attacked. Margallo was killed in action and replaced by General Macías. More troops were sent from Spain. General Martínez Campos was later appointed head of the military operation and commanded 20,000 men. Sultan Mulai al-Hassan I opened peace negotiations, which ended the so-called Guerra de Margallo on March 10, 1894 .
