Juan José Arenas
Juan José Arenas de Pablo (born July 3, 1940 in Huesca , † November 9, 2017 in Santander ) was a Spanish civil engineer.
Arenas studied at the Polytechnic in Madrid with a degree in 1963 and a doctorate in 1970. From 1971 to 1976 he was professor of prestressed concrete there, then professor of bridge-building at the University of Cantabria in Santander.
From 1969 he was an independent consultant engineer for bridge construction. In 1988 he founded the engineering office APIA XXI in Santander. In 1999 he founded the bridge construction company Arenas & Associates.
His bridges include the Barqueta Bridge for the 1992 World Exhibition in Seville, the Puente de Hispanoamérica in Valladolid (a cable-stayed bridge), the Puente del Tercer Milenio over the Ebro in Saragossa (completed in 2008), the port bridge in Barcelona (2000), a The bridge named after him in Santander (2010) in the park of Las Llamas, the Puente Puerta de Las Rozas in Madrid (2006) and the viaduct of La Regenta in Asturias (for which he received the V Premio Internacional Puente de Alcántara).
In 2017 he received the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering . In 1993 he received the European steel construction award from ECCS, in 2010 the fib award for outstanding concrete structures and in 2009 the Gustave Magnel gold medal.
