His parents were Teresa Cepeda and Martín Barrundia. His brother was José Francisco Barrundia y Cepeda . Juan Barrundia was a senior member of the Fiebres, as the Partido Liberal was called.

The constituent assembly for the province of Guatemala, elected on May 5, 1824, met for the first time in Antigua Guatemala on September 16, 1824 and elected Alejandro Díaz Cabeza de Vaca, Juan Barrundia, and Cirilo Flores to the provincial leadership. On June 17, 1826, the Condottiere Nicolás Louís Raoul was arrested by troops of the Central American Confederation. Juan Barrundia intervened and dispatched troops to rescue him. In July 1826 Juan Barrundia was arrested by troops of the Central American Confederation under Manuel Montúfar y Coronado on the orders of Manuel José Arce y Fagoaga .

On July 11, 1836, he bought a plot of land in Chalchihuitepeque, Santa Rosa Department with 14.75 Caballerías (665 hectares).
