Hubert Howe Bancroft (born May 5, 1832 in Granville , Ohio ; died March 2, 1918 in Walnut Creek , California ) was an American historian and ethnologist who wrote several works on the western United States , the states of Texas , California, Alaska , but also Mexico , Central America and British Columbia wrote.

Life

In particular, he has emerged as the author of a five-volume work on the indigenous peoples of the North American Pacific states entitled Native Races of the Pacific States of North America .

In 1856 he came to San Francisco and opened a bookstore. He obtained his education in bookstores:

"It was in the bookstores that he obtained his education, his attendance at public schools being limited."

Bancroft also collected books, maps, documents, and manuscripts. When he died, his library contained about sixty thousand volumes. The University of California, Berkeley acquired his extensive collection in 1905 . Since then it has been housed there in the Bancroft Library named after him .

His estate in Spring Valley , San Diego County , California, where Bancroft lived from 1885 until his death in 1918, is recognized as a California Historical Landmark and a National Historic Landmark . Bancroft died in Walnut Creek and is buried in the famous Cypress Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Colma .

An extensive edition of his works (The Works) comprises 39 volumes.
