Juan de Ayala

Juan Manuel de Ayala (born December 28, 1745 in Osuna (Spain), † December 30, 1797 ) was an officer in the Spanish fleet in New Spain . He played a supporting role in the conquest of California , in which he opened up the Bay of San Francisco with his ship San Carlos as the first European .

Ayala joined the Spanish Navy on September 19, 1760, until he rose to the rank of Captain in 1782, and retired on March 14, 1785.

During the conquest of California, Ayala was sent north to provide military support for Juan Bautista de Anza's expedition . He passed the Golden Gate on August 5, 1775 and anchored in a bay off Angel Island .
