Juan de Flandes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juan de Flandes , also known as Johannes von Flandern (* around 1465, † 1519), was a Dutch painter who mainly worked in Spain from 1496 to 1519. His real name is unknown, but the back of a work assigned to him shows the inscription Juan Astrat , which could infer the name of Jan van der Staat . The name Jan Sallaert , an artist in Ghent around 1480, could also be an option .

Life

Salome with the head of Johannes Baptist , 1496

Juan de Flandes was born in Flanders around 1465 . Since his works show similarities with the works of Joos van Wassenhove , Hugo van der Goes and other Ghent artists, it is assumed that he was an apprentice in Ghent.

It is only proven that he became court artist of Isabella I of Castile in Spain. His name appeared in account books in 1496, and in 1498 he was called "court painter" there. He was in her service until Isabella's death in 1504. After her death he carried out sacred works for Spanish churches in Salamanca from 1505 to 1507. Since his wife is mentioned as a widow in Palencia in December 1519 , it is assumed that he stayed there later.

Works

The clear majority of his work is in collections outside Spain and comes from the later creative phase in which he devoted himself to religious topics. There are four parts of a large altar panel from a Palencian church in the Prado and four in the National Gallery of Art in Washington . De Flandes often portrayed the royal family, but he also created a group of small winged altar panels (8.5 by 16.7 cm) dedicated to Isabella , most of which are in the royal collection in Madrid .

His works show a mixture of Dutch-Genetic style and Spanish taste. He has a highly developed feeling for space and light and knows how to divide space into a series of narrow levels. His later works show strong mannerist traits.
