Juan de Torquemada (historian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juan de Torquemada (* between 1557 and 1565 in Torquemada , † January 1, 1624 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish missionary and chronicler .

Torquemada went to Mexico as a member of the Franciscan Order , where he became a student of Gerónimo de Mendieta . In 1600 he worked as Guardian , later as Rector of the Church in Santiago Tlatelolco . In 1615 his book " Monarquia Indiana " was published in Seville . The work that deals with the history of the Aztecs under Spanish rule is essentially a translation of Mendieta'sHistoria eclesiastica indiana ”. Yet it contains sharp criticism of the resettlement program that the Spanish administration imposed on the Indian communities.
