Cheering Karl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jubelkarl is a traditional figure of the Christmas crib , which is particularly widespread in the nail smiths in the Ennstal and Steyrtal in Upper Austria .

A red jacket or waistcoat, black trousers with white socks, a black or green hat and two raised arms characterize the appearance of the Jubelkarl. In the Ennstal the Jubelkarl is made as a so-called Loahmmandl (little clay man) and painted in traditional colors. The bas-relief figures have been made from clay in Upper Austria since the 18th century or, today, preferably from plaster . In addition to the Jubelkarl, the scenery of the Ennstal nail smith nativity scene traditionally includes numerous peasant figures such as the apple maid , the egg carrier or the Kasmandl .

In other regions, the Jubelkarl is also known as Carlo allegro (Italy) or Ravi (France). In all cases, the nativity figure represents the common man who rejoices in the birth of Jesus Christ . In the Nagelschmiedkrippen, the Jubelkarl can usually be found near the crib or on the edge of the scenery. In front of some residential buildings in the vicinity of Garsten and Steyr , a Jubelkarl figure adorns the house entrance at Christmas time.

The crib figure Juchheissa or the Upper Austrian Jucheiserer , which is particularly widespread in Styria , is similar to the Jubelkarl, but the Juchheissa or Jucheiserer waves his hat as a sign of joy.
