The Jubilee River at Slough Weir

The Jubilee River is a 7 miles long canal in southern England that was built in the late 1990s and early 2000s to prevent flooding of certain areas when the Thames floods . The canal protects Maidenhead , Windsor and Eton in the counties of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire , among others .

This is achieved by diverting excess water from the Thames through the canal above Boulter's Lock near Maidenhead and only returning it to the river below Eton.

The canal was given its name in 2002 on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
