Alf Önnerfors

Alf Roland Önnerfors (born November 30, 1925 in Hovmantorp , Lessebo municipality ; † June 22, 2019 in Lund ) was a Swedish classical and Middle Latin philologist .

Life

After his doctorate, Alf Önnerfors worked as a university lecturer at Uppsala University (1956–1962) and Lund University ; During this time he was a substitute professor three times (1958, 1960 and 1962). In 1963 he accepted a call to the Free University of Berlin , where he held a full professorship. In 1970 he moved to the University of Cologne , where he worked as a professor for Middle Latin Philology at the Institute for Classical Studies until his retirement (1991). Önnerfors was a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences from 1973 to 1997, and a corresponding member since he moved to Lund in 1997.

Alf Önnerfors was one of the leading Middle Latin philologists of the 20th century. He wrote numerous monographs on Middle Latin literature, including critical editions of various works. His work Middle Latin Philology: Contributions to Research into Medieval Latinity (Darmstadt 1975) is a standard work. Among other things, he dealt with the medical terminology of the Middle Ages. Together with Fritz Wagner , he published a commemorative publication in 1973 for his predecessor in Cologne, Karl Langosch (1903–1992). His small writings appeared in 1998 under the title Classica et mediaevalia .
