The Judd Fountain are three fountains in Winterthur's old town ( Steinberggasse ) that were created by the American minimalist artist Donald Judd .
In winter and on special occasions, the fountains are protected with a cover.
History of origin
The city of Winterthur commissioned Donald Judd as early as 1991 to plan a fountain system for Steinberggasse, as there was enough space for this in the newly car-free old town. For cost reasons, this project was then postponed until the alley was leveled. From 1993, a sponsoring association took over the realization of the fountain in Steinberggasse and, in cooperation with the Technikum Winterthur, created a detailed project and collected the necessary money: 790,000 CHF. Judd died on February 12, 1994 while the planning was still being carried out to implement the project in New York . In 1996 the construction of the well system could then begin. When the fountain was completed on June 14, 1997, it was donated to the city of Winterthur by the Judd-Brunnen sponsoring association. The maintenance of the Judd fountain costs around 65,000 CHF per year.
architecture
The Judd fountains consist of three individual, elliptical fountains that draw their water from a common well room with a UV light filter system. The three fountains are of different heights, the lowest of the three fountains at the eastern end is only 115 cm high, the water level in all three fountains being at the same height, which is intended to illustrate the slope of Steinberggasse. The fountains mark the course of the former Stadtbach , which used to flow through the middle of Steinberggasse.
