history

At the request of the sovereign, Jews settled in Koblenz since the early Middle Ages . Jewish life in Koblenz is first mentioned in a customs code of 1104. From the 13th century, Jews lived next to Christians in the "Judengasse". The coexistence was also based on the protection that the archbishop guaranteed as sovereign . For this reason, the location was close to the old castle . This should offer protection in the event of riots.

At the same time there was a direct proximity to the market at the Florinskirche . Originally, Jews had settled in the city because of its location in Koblenz as a transit point and center of trade and market. Their reputation as residents grew; In 1307 the Jews of Koblenz were granted full citizenship .

Living according to occupational groups was typical of a medieval city. There was a bakery, blacksmith or webergasse, among others. So having a separate street for the Jews as a group of medieval townspeople was nothing special. As in every Jewish residential area, there was a synagogue with a school, a ritual bath ( mikveh ), a hospital and a Jewish cemetery in Koblenz .

At the end of the 17th century, all the buildings in the old Judengasse were probably destroyed. As a result, there are no more remains of the medieval Jewish settlement today. At first the small Jewish street in Baldwin Street had been renamed, the residents of the Jewish quarter in 1859 requested from the city the change of the street name, which took place the 1886th
