Judith Binney

Dame Judith Mary Caroline Binney , DNZM , (* 1940 in New South Wales , Australia ; † February 15, 2011 in Auckland ) was a New Zealand historian and from 2004 was Professor at the University of Auckland .

Live and act

Binney was born in Australia in 1940, came to New Zealand with her parents in 1947 and studied at the University of Auckland , where she also graduated in history in 1965. From 1966 to 2004 she worked as a lecturer in the history department of the university. She was an associate professor until 1996 and was appointed full professor with a permanent chair in 1997.

Binney's first book was written in 1968 from her doctoral thesis. It was a biography of Thomas Kendall , an early Anglican missionary , who on behalf of the Church Missionary Society went to New Zealand, with the warlord Hongi Hika became friends in the arms trade with muskets ( Musket Wars ) entangled and year 17 after adultery with a Māori was eventually recalled by the mission society.

Further work and publications on the history of New Zealand followed.

Binney was hit by a truck in Auckland in December 2009 and suffered serious head injuries from which she has been slow to recover. She died at the age of 70 on February 15, 2011 in Auckland.

Awards

On December 31, 2005, she was awarded the DNZM Dame Companion New Zealand Order of Merit for her services in New Zealand historical research.

Binney was a member of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board and was one of the Guardians of the Alexander Turnbull Library . She was also a member of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa .
