Judith Shatin
Judith Shatin (* 1949 ) is an American composer and music teacher.
Life
Shatin studied at Douglass College , the Juilliard School of Music and Princeton University . She is a professor at the University of Virginia and director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music, which she founded in 1987 . She was a board member of the International Alliance for Women in Music , the League of Composers / ISCM and the American Composers Alliance and 1989-1993 President of the American Women Composers, Inc .
As a Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation , Sharin had study visits to Germany, France and Israel. She has received four National Endowment for the Arts composition grants . She has received awards from the American Music Center , Meet the Composer , Met-Life Creative Connections , New Jersey State Arts Council, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and has received commissions from the Barcelona New Music Ensemble , the Dutch Hexagon Ensemble , the Kronos Quartet , the Library of Congress and the National Symphony Orchestra's Hechinger Commission .
Shatin composed chamber music, choral works, ballet and electro-acoustic music, created music installations, multimedia and orchestral works. Her works were performed at festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival , the BAM Next Wave , the Grand Teton Festival the Moscow Autumn listed. In 2008 she composed Tower of the Eight Winds for violin and piano for the Library of Congress . Commissioned by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra's Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra , the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra , Jefferson, In His Own Words for speaker and orchestra, premiered in 2010.
