Judy Ledgerwood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judy Ledgerwood (* 1959 in Brazil, Indiana ) is an American painter who has been exploring light, color and space in her monumental paintings and murals since the 1980s .

Career

Judy Ledgerwood studied at the BFA The Art Academy of Cincinnati in Ohio and at the MFA The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois. In her work, she combines concrete abstraction with influences from areas of popular culture traditionally occupied by women, such as fashion or textile design, and stages the elements in intense colors. The artist developed a new, unique aspect in her painting: she expands the boundaries of concrete abstraction by the subversive aspect of sensuality. Ledgerwood became known for abstract paintings reminiscent of landscape paintings that were kept in "feminine" pastel tones. Since the 1990s she has been concretizing the vocabulary of her compositions on the simple basic shapes of circles and squares, which she groups in intense colors into vibrantly sensual compositions. Her works have been shown in numerous international exhibitions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago) and the Renaissance Society of Chicago. Her works are represented in important collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Häusler Contemporary presented the artist for the first time in Germany in 2005 and in Switzerland in 2008.
