history

Historical poster Jugend am Werk

Jugend am Werk began its work in 1948. The labor market administration at the time was looking for solutions to the high level of youth unemployment after the Second World War. The so-called vocational preschool Jugend am Werk implemented numerous course measures. In the founding year, locations were set up in Graz , Judenburg , Zeltweg and Fohnsdorf and 270 young people were looked after. In 1955 there were already more than 3,700 young people at 20 locations.

When unemployment fell drastically in Austria with the boom in the 1960s, the association's management considered dissolving the organization. However, a new area of activity soon emerged: young people with disabilities were already being looked after in many courses, and so working with people with disabilities became the new central area of responsibility. On the basis of the Styrian Disability Act (1964), new related offers were installed.

With the economic downturn in the 1970s, the AMV area also gained in importance again, so that the work of Jugend am Werk Styria was now based on two pillars: vocational preparation courses for unemployed people and training in the hotel and hospitality industry. During this time, there was a regional expansion in the area of assistance for the disabled.

The first private initiatives in the context of so-called welfare in Styria emerged in the early 1980s . One of these projects - the very first socio-educational residential community in Styria - was run by Jugend am Werk from 1982 onwards. With this facility, the foundation stone was also laid for what would later become the youth welfare department.

In 2000, Jugend am Werk Steiermark GmbH was founded in 100% ownership of the association. All operational activities of social work, qualification and training, activities for work integration take place in the GmbH.

Currently, Jugend am Werk Steiermark GmbH is confronted with growing challenges: Maintaining or constantly improving the quality of services while at the same time using public resources carefully, adapting the range of services to the new legal framework and changing framework conditions due to strict tendering procedures in the field of labor market policy are essential points.
