The youth delegates for Sustainable Development accompany the German government delegation led by the Environment Ministry to the High Level Policy Forum on Sustainable Development (Engl. High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development , in short HLPF ) of the UN . There they represent the interests of young people from Germany before the world community.

At the Rio summit in 1992, youth was recognized for the first time as a separate group that is particularly affected by questions of sustainable development.

Since the World Summit in Johannesburg in 2002 (“ Rio + 10 ”), the German Federal Youth Council (DBJR) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) have been sending youth delegates to the UN Commission for Sustainable Development.

After Rio + 20, the Commission was replaced by the High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development at the United Nations. As part of the German delegation, the youth delegates give young people from Germany a voice there.

That is why they are in close contact with children and young people. They collect ideas, wishes and demands at regular events in schools, associations and various initiatives. At the same time, they report on their experiences and Germany's progress in implementing the 2030 agenda .

Work of the youth delegates

At the United Nations

In September 2015, the 2030 Agenda was adopted during the UN General Assembly . This includes 17 sustainability goals ( Sustainable Development Goals ) that the global community would like to achieve by 2030.

The progress of these commitments is reviewed annually during the HLPF meeting.

The youth delegates are part of a delegation from the federal government and represent young people from Germany in this body. You will work with the BMU during the days in New York . At the same time, together with youth delegates from other countries, they formulate expectations of the governments and the United Nations.

They also work with the Major Group for Children and Youth, which represents the global interests of young people before the United Nations.

Furthermore, after consultation with the Federal Environment Ministry, they attend other thematic conferences and summits, such as B. the UNEA and PAGE conferences.

In Germany

In preparation for the “High-Level Forum”, the youth delegates speak with young people and with experts for sustainable development from civil society organizations in Germany.

They bring the perspective of young people to events to which they are invited and organize workshops and give lectures. If necessary and useful, they take part in international meetings of other youth delegates or networks.

Important conferences in Germany for the youth delegates for sustainable development include: a. the Council for Sustainable Development youCon and the dialogue forum of the Federal Environment Ministry.

The youth delegates for sustainable development are selected through an open call for proposals from the German Federal Youth Association. According to the zipper process, a new youth delegate is elected every autumn, who is then in office for two years. This procedure is intended to enable experiences to be passed on. In addition to interest in international contexts and sustainability, social commitment in associations is also assumed when making a selection. In addition, an attempt is made to fill the office equally.
