The Julabo GmbH is a manufacturer of temperature control technology for research and industry. The basis for this is the development of the contact thermometer principle by Ernst Juchheim in 1926.

background

The first glass contact thermometers for temperature control were equipped with fixed contacts. They could switch the connected device - for example a heater - on and off at short intervals via a contact protection relay and trigger an acoustic warning function. For more complex applications, however, the desired temperature value must be variably adjustable. The master glass instrument maker Ernst Juchheim solved this requirement in 1926 with the development of the world's first glass contact thermometer with variable temperature setting. In 1927 the German Reich patent was granted.

The company has two evenly arranged milk glass scales, which are connected with an electrically conductive metal thread and a sliding contact in a capillary tube. The setting mark on the upper scale can be set from the outside with a movable magnet. The tip of the metal thread on the lower scale is set to the same value. As soon as the mercury column reaches the defined target value during heating, an electrical contact is made. The connected device is temperature-controlled switched off and on again at short intervals. This constantly repeating process takes place with a very high control accuracy of around 0.1 K.

History of the company

The patented new development was produced from 1927 onwards by the Hermann Juchheim company founded by Wilhelm and Ernst Juchheim in Ilmenau in Thuringia. In 1952 the company was nationalized as a state-owned company (VEB). Ernst Juchheim set up Heju GmbH in Solingen. Gerhard Juchheim, the youngest son of the inventor Ernst Juchheim, founded Juchheim Labortechnik KG in Seelbach / Black Forest in January 1967 - independently of the company in Solingen.

In 2007, Markus Juchheim came to the company to support Gerhard Juchheim and took over sole management in 2016. To this day, JULABO is an owner-managed family company.

The trademark "Julabo" was adopted in the company name from 1980. Since then, Julabo GmbH has developed into one of the world's leading manufacturers in the temperature control industry. Today the independent, medium-sized company has eleven branches as well as sales and service partners in over 100 countries (as of 2020).

Products and Innovations

From 1972 the company gradually introduced thermostats with fully electronic temperature control. Especially for applications in medicine and chemical engineering, heating and cooling thermostats with higher heating and pump outputs and extended working temperature ranges have been developed.

Since 1995 only digital thermostats and measuring and control devices have been manufactured. The range now includes cooling thermostats, heating thermostats, highly dynamic temperature control systems, circulation coolers, recirculation coolers, water baths and shaking water baths.

At Achema 2012, the specialist media LABORPRAXIS, PROCESS and PharmaTEC nominated the highly dynamic temperature control system PRESTO A80 as one of three products for the “Innovation Award” in the thermal process category.

At Achema 2015, JULABO presented the new CORIO line, which is the entry point for thermostats. CORIO devices are available as cooling thermostats with a temperature range from −30 to +150 ° C, as heating thermostats with transparent baths (+20 to +100 ° C) or stainless steel baths (+20 to 150 ° C). The CORIO line replaces the economy line from JULABO and comes up with more functionalities and more modern content such as a USB interface.

In 2018, the Dyneo line was presented at Analytica 2018 in Munich. The Dyneo devices are cooling and heating thermostats with a temperature range of −50 ° C to +200 ° C. They are available in different performance classes as immersion thermostats (+20 to +200 ° C), refrigerated circulation thermostats (−50 to +200 ° C) and circulation thermostats (+20 ° C to +200 ° C).

At the Achema 2018 in Frankfurt, Julabo gave insights into the inner workings of a Presto device for the first time with augmented reality . This allowed visitors to the stand to get an idea of the technology and structure of the devices.
