Jules Ronjat

Jules Ronjat (* 1864 in Vienne ; † January 19, 1925 in Geneva ) was a French linguist, Romanist and Provençalist .

life and work

Jules-Antoine Ronjat studied law and was a lawyer in Paris and Vienne. In private he did research in Provençal studies, in 1902 at the suggestion of his friends Maurice Grammont and Pierre Devoluy (1862–1932) he was secretary of Félibrige and in 1909 was accepted into the Société de linguistique de Paris. He completed his habilitation with the two theses Essai de syntaxe des parlers provençaux modern (Mâcon 1913) and Le développement du langage observé chez un enfant bilingue (Paris 1913), lectured briefly in Lyon and moved to Geneva in 1914, where he worked with Charles Bally was in contact and at his instigation became a private lecturer at the university in 1916. He was one of the proofreaders of theCours de linguistique générale by Ferdinand de Saussure , edited by Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye . At the University of Geneva he held a. a. Lectures on the grammar of speaking French.

Ronjat's posthumously published Grammaire istorique des parlers provençaux modern in 4 volumes (Montpellier 1930–1941, 2 volumes, Geneva / Marseille 1980) is considered to be one of the most important works of Provencal studies. (The spelling of the word historique corresponds to the author's orthographic reform concept.)

Ronjats Thèse complémentaire dealt with the linguistic development of his son, who grew up bilingual in German and French (Ronjat's wife was German).
