Julian Laine

Julian "Digger" Laine (* 1907 in New Orleans ; † September 10, 1957 ibid) was an American jazz trombonist .

Laine, who is not related to Papa Jack Laine , played with the Melody Masters of Louis Prima and Sharkey Bonano in 1928 and then in the late 1920s in the band of Johnny Bertucci in Biloxi (Mississippi) . Back in New Orleans, he played on river steamers in Tony Almerico's band . In 1936 he played with Sharkey Bonano and then with Red Bolman and Jules Bauduc . After a hiatus due to a car accident, he played with Louis Prima in Chicago and with Joe Venuti before returning to New Orleans and playing with Almerico again. In 1940 he founded his own band, served in the US Army from 1942 to 1944 and then played again with Almerico, with Leon Prima and Bonano. From 1946 he belonged for 18 months with Johnny Wiggs , Bujie Centobie, Armand Hug , Chink Martin and Monk Hazel to an all-star band that worked weekly for the WSMB station. In 1949 he played with his own band at the Three Deuces in New Orleans and in 1950 with Muggsy Spanier in Chicago and San Francisco. In the same year he recorded with Irving Fazola . He toured with Bonano and occasionally played with Johnny Wiggs in New Orleans (early 1950s) before giving up his music career for health reasons.

In 1941 he recorded with George Hartman .
