Tony Almerico

Anthony "Tony" Almerico (born August 16, 1905 in New Orleans ; † December 5, 1961 ibid) was an American musician ( trumpet , cornet , vocals and band leader ) of Dixieland jazz and disk jockey .

Life

Almerico, child of Italian immigrants, received his musical training in a Jesuit high school . From the late 1920s he played in the Territory Bands of Slim Lamar and Mart Britt , who were active in the Tennessee and Georgia area . In the 1940s he lived again in New Orleans and worked with his own Dixieland formations (including with Irving Fazola ); In 1949 he recorded for the first time under his own name ( Tony Almerico Dixieland Jamboree All Stars ) for Dot Records and Crescent City . From the following decade he performed on Royal Street with his Tony Almerico's Parisian Room Band ; he also worked a. a. with Sam DeKemel and the Parisian Room Allstars , Lizzy Miles , Pete Fountain , Santo Pecora , Jack Delaney and the Dixieland All Stars (album Benefit Night for Monk Hazel , 1956). Between 1928 and 1961 he was involved in 26 recording sessions.

Since the mid-1950s he also worked as a radio DJ for the nationwide broadcaster WJMR.
