history

It is assumed that as early as 500 to 800 AD there were settlements in the area of the present-day village.

In 1022, a place called Linnethe is mentioned for the first time in a deed of foundation of the Hildesheim Monastery of St. Michael . However, this cannot be equated with the first documentary mention of Westerlinde, as it is unknown whether Osterlinde or Westerlinde was meant. In 1480 (according to other sources not until 1548 in the Lichtenberg hereditary register) the name Westerlinde can be identified for the first time to distinguish it from the neighboring village.

The noble von Linnethe family owned lands from 1187 until they died out in 1553. In addition, however, other families such as the von Saldern and von Hagen families had property in the village. In 1273, the Dorstadt monastery and the Wohldenberg counts also received property in Westerlinde.

Since the late Middle Ages, Westerlinde has belonged to the Lichtenberg district and thus to the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . In the Thirty Years War from 1618 to 1648 Westerlinde was not spared from destruction either. In 1626, troops briefly settled in the village. When they left, the village was burned down to the church.

The oldest surviving residential house in the village dates from 1661. The half-timbered house was renovated in the first half of the 1990s.

A school had existed in the village since at least the beginning of the 18th century;

From 1840 to 1920 the number of farms in Westerlinde decreased significantly. During this time, many small craft businesses settled in the village.

A second district road is also worth mentioning, which leads north to Hohenassel.
