family

Julien-Léopold Lobin was the son of a former soldier and merchant who died in 1824. Julien-Léopold decided not to study art and worked in a shop in Tours . In 1836 he married his rich cousin Adélaïde Discouzis (1818–1880). From this marriage there were four children: Lucien-Léopold (1837-1892), Alfred-Marcel (1842-1862), Alfred-Adolphe (1845-1847) and Marie-Mathilde (1848-1864). Despite the responsibility for his family, he gave up his work in 1838 and began to study painting in Paris. In 1841 he traveled to Italy to study and in 1842, from 1844 to 1846 he was exhibited in the Salon de Paris .

From 1847 Julien-Léopold Lobin created cardboard boxes for the stained glass factory in Tours, which he founded in the same year, and took over its management from September 1848. Over the next few years he gradually bought all of the company's shares in order to be able to work independently. In 1855 the Atelier Lobin had 51 employees and in 1859 it moved to No. 35, rue des Ursulines in Tours. In 1862 the workshop was enlarged. By the time Julien-Léopold Lobin died in 1864, the studio had produced over 300 large-format windows and fulfilled many other orders. In 650 churches there are windows in his workshop, almost all of which were created according to his templates.

Julien-Léopold Lobin quickly achieved great success as he maintained close contacts with the clergy and presented his work at exhibitions in Paris and the province. He also published a sales catalog in 1863. He employed several agents who requisitioned orders in the French regions.

His son Lucien-Léopold , who had already become a partner in 1863, took over the management of the flourishing company after the death of his father.
