Julius Polentz

Julius Polentz (born May 6, 1821 in Schwerin ; † March 19, 1869 there ; full name: Julius Karl Theodor Polentz ) was a German educator, poet and editor.

Life

Julius Polentz's father was a son of the craftsman ( trimmers ) Johann Christian Polentz. After the early death of the father, he had to leave high school to contribute to the family's income. He worked as a copyist. He obtained his education self-taught. In 1842 Polentz became secretary and calculator at the von Laffert manor in Lehsen near Wittenburg , before he worked as a private teacher in Hamburg for two years. Julius Polentz worked on the People's Conversation Lexicon , which appeared in 18 volumes from 1844 to 1846. In 1848 he became president of the Schwerin Reform Association. Julius Polentz was publisher and editor of the magazine Mecklenburgischer Bürgerfreund from 1848 to 1849 and one of the founders and president of the first Schwerin workers' association. In 1849 he was rapporteur for the committee to investigate the situation of rural workers at the congress of North German workers' associations in Hamburg. In October 1849 Julius Polentz was arrested and sentenced to twelve years in prison. He sat in the Dreibergen prison until 1854 and then worked again as a copyist, private teacher and assistant at the government library in Schwerin. In 1858 he founded a private school for boys.
