Julius L. Shaneson (born July 24, 1944 in Richmond , Virginia ) is an American mathematician who studies topology . He is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania .

Shaneson received his doctorate in 1968 from Melvin Rothenberg at the University of Chicago ( Wall 's Surgery Obstruction Groups for Z x G and Classification of 5-Manifolds ). He was professor at Rutgers University from the mid-1970s and at the University of Pennsylvania from the mid-1990s, where he was head of the mathematics faculty from 2002 to 2006.

Together with Sylvain Cappell, he published a series of papers on the problem of the connection between topological similarity and linear equivalence, on higher-dimensional knot theory, characteristic classes of singular spaces, and on geometric numbering of grid points with applications in number theory.

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Warsaw in 1983 ( Linear algebra, topology and number theory ) and in Zurich in 1994 ( Characteristic Classes, Lattice Points and Euler-MacLaurin Formulas ). He was a Guggenheim Fellow (1981) and a Sloan Research Fellow .
