Julius Stockfleth
Julius Stockfleth (born January 29, 1857 in Wyk auf Föhr , † 1935 there ) was a German draftsman and painter .
Life
Julius Stockfleth was the son of Friedrich August Stockfleth and his wife Louise, b. Hansen. His father was a master carpenter on the island of Föhr , his mother was a housekeeper in the house of the Danish King Christian VIII , when he was with his family to relax on Föhr.
In Husum he learned the painting trade. Whenever he visited his hometown Wyk auf Föhr from there, he took the ice boat from Dagebüll in winter , which he recorded on one of his drawings. The family emigrated to the United States in 1883 and settled in Galveston in 1885 . It was there that Stockfleth experienced the hurricane in 1900 , which killed around 8,000 people. Among them were numerous members of the Stockfleth family, but Julius Stockfleth was spared. Stockfleth was a painter in Galveston. He painted ships lying in the harbor and found good sales for his pictures with their crews. His pictures became known of the destruction caused by the hurricane.
Julius Stockfleth remained unmarried; In 1907 he returned to Wyk with his sister Leonore Wilson, the widow of a diver. She died in 1927. After his return to Föhr, he painted motifs from his homeland. To this day, his works can be found in many houses. The Wyker sketchbook is a compilation of his Föhrer works .
