Julius Valentin van Gollenesse
Julius Valentin Stein von Gollenesse (also: Golnesse ) (born February 17, 1691 in Groel (city) , Sweden , † January 14, 1755 in Batavia ) was the Dutch governor of Ceylon .
Life
Despite his birth in Sweden, Julius Valentin came from a Mecklenburg family. In 1723 he signed up for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and made a very successful career there. His voyage began on January 9, 1723 on the ship Stabroeck . The ship was on its maiden voyage from Texel to Batavia, where it arrived on July 11, 1723. In Batavia he married the widow Magdalena Cornelia van Loon in 1725 (baptized on August 19, 1698 in Batavia ;?) From 1735 to 1743 he was already in command of Malabar . Then he was from May 11, 1743 to March 6, 1751 Dutch governor in Ceylon. During this time he had the Wolfendal Church (Wolvendaal) built in Colombo. In 1750 he was appointed general director in Batavia. He held this position until his death in 1755. At that time he acquired a precious collection of jewelry, which he gave to Princess Anna in 1754 . Interestingly, a collection of paper cuttings has survived the centuries and could be viewed in an exhibition in the State Museum in Schwerin in 2008.
family
On June 12, 1725 Julius Valentin married Magdalena Cornelia van Loon's widow of Barend Barkhuysen in Batavia . The couple Stein van Gollenesse had to bury three of their children in the St. Francis Church in Cochin in 1739, a daughter aged 7, the daughter Magdalena Ursula (1735–1739) and the son Gustaav Willem (* December 5, 1737; † March 30, 1739). The daughter Antonia Dorothea Stein van Gollenesse (* April 17, 1740 - † December 28, 1774 drowned in Zwolle) first married the merchant Gerard van der Does (* April 22, 1732 - May 6, 1757) in Batavia and then the Director of the branch in Dejima Herbert Vermeulen (May 9, 1738; † 1783). Since he had no biological son, Stein van Gollenesse adopted the six-year-old Julius Ferdinand von Ranzow , the son of Ferdinand Anton von Ranzow, in 1751 .
