June Tyson
June Tyson (born February 5, 1936 in Albemarle (North Carolina) , † November 24, 1992 in Philadelphia ) was an American singer of free and avant-garde jazz .
Life
Tyson first worked as a songwriter for Lord Alan & Sir Richard ( Little Things ). Since 1968 she sang with the band of Sun Ra . Since 1972 she has performed regularly with the latter's Arkestra and is also involved in most of the ensemble's recordings until her death. She became a kind of “ambassador to the public”; this also meant that her singing parts in live performances became longer and longer. She also played the violin on the late recordings. The talented avant-garde singer appeared almost exclusively in the context of Sun Ra, heard for example on the album Strange Celestial Road (1987). She died of breast cancer . The tape Voice of the Galaxies, Volume One was only released posthumously in 1996 under her name, and in 2019 the compilation album Saturnian Queen of the Sun Ra Orchestra .
