The Jungfernbrücke is a listed pedestrian bridge that spans the Zollkanal in the Port of Hamburg . It was built in 1887/88 as a wrought-iron pedestrian bridge and has a flat-spanned half-timbered arch that is cut in the middle by the road surface. The Jungfernbrücke connects the street Katharinenkirchhof with the Brooksinsel as part of the Speicherstadt . The street running parallel to the canal was still called Kleiner Jungfernstieg, from which the bridge owes its name. Hundreds of love locks are evidence of the corresponding number of marriage vows .
The Jungfernbrücke was designed purely as a pedestrian bridge from the start: There are several steps on both sides that deliberately exclude vehicles. The name makes the bridge a “wedding bridge” today.
Technical specifications
The single-span steel arch bridge with suspended roadway has riveted steel truss parabolic girders. It is a total of 42 meters long and 4.30 meters wide. This results in a bridge area of 180.6 m². The overall construction is only a maximum of 1.86 meters high. The passage width is 40.8 m, the clearance height 7.85 m.
Monument protection
The bridge was opened on May 15, 1991 as part of the Speicherstadt with the monument list no. 968 entered in the list of monuments by the Hamburg Monument Protection Office . When the Monument Protection Act was amended in 2013, the number changed to 11867. The file number for the bridge, including open spaces and ancillary buildings, is 39-103.109 to 39-103.129. A monument protection card is in the state archive, another copy is at the registering authority.
