Junuthula N. Reddy (born August 12, 1945 in Warangal , Andhra Pradesh ) is an Indian - American engineering scientist. He is known for using the finite element method (FEM) in mechanics. He is a professor at Texas A&M University .

Reddy graduated from Osmania University in Hyderabad with a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1968 and from Oklahoma State University with a master's degree in 1970. He received his doctorate in 1973 with J. Tinsley Oden at the University of Alabama in Huntsville . He then was at the University of Texas at Austin and 1974-75 at Lockheed Missiles and Space. In 1974 he became an assistant professor and later an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma and from 1980 he was a professor at the Virginia Polytechnical Institute, from 1986 as Clifton C. Garvin Professor. He has been a professor at Texas A&M University since 1992. There he is Oscar S. Wyatt Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Distinguished University Professor.

He is known for his contributions to FEM and to variation methods in mechanics, plate theory, fracture mechanics, mechanics of composites, plasticity theory, biomechanics, hydrodynamics and applied functional analysis. He published over 380 scientific papers (2011) and 14 books.

He is an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Lisbon . In 2014 he received the Raymond D. Mindlin Medal of the ASCE, the Nathan M. Newmark Medal in 1998 and the Huber Prize in 1984. In 1992 he received the Worcester Reed Warner Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and in 1976 the Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers. For 2016 he was awarded the William Prager Medal , for 2018 the Von Karman Medal and for 2019 the Tymoshenko Medal . He is a Fellow of ASCE and ASME.

Reddy has been married since 1968 and has two children.
