Juozas Tūbelis (born April 9, 1882 in Ilgalaukiai near Rokiškis , † September 30, 1939 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian politician and prime minister .

biography

In 1908 Juozas Tūbelis graduated from the Agronomy Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute in Riga and then worked as a teacher in Riga. During the First World War he fought as a soldier on the side of Russia .

On November 11, 1918, Tūbelis became Minister of Agriculture. He had to give up this post five months later - on March 12, 1919 - but was appointed Minister of Education until June 19, 1920. In the presidential dictatorship of the Lithuanian President Antanas Smetona , who dissolved parliament on April 12, 1927 after the coup d'état of December 17, 1926, he became Lithuanian Minister of Finance from May 3, 1927 to March 24, 1938. On September 23, 1929, he was also Prime Minister for three terms before resigning on March 24, 1938. He then worked again as Minister of Agriculture until October 1, 1938, and headed the Lithuanian Central Bank in 1938/39 .

Tūbelis was a member of the Pažangos partija party and from 1931 to 1938 chairman of the Lietuvos tautininkų sąjunga party .

Tūbelis is buried in Kaunas.
