Juris Dobelis (born July 8, 1940 in Riga ) is a Latvian chemist and politician . He was a member of the 5th to 9th Saeima since the restoration of independence in 1990 and has been a member of the VL-TB / LNNK party, which emerged from an electoral alliance of national and anti-Soviet forces .

Career

In 1958 Dobelis got the higher education entrance qualification with excellent grades. He completed an engineering course in 1963 at the chemistry faculty of the RTU .

In the same year he began his professional activities, first in the “ Sarkandaugava ” glass factory , later as a chemistry teacher and in various research institutes and engineering offices, among others in the fields of insulation and applied biochemistry .

During the time of the Latvian SSR , Dobelis was active in informally or covertly organized groups that promoted the preservation of the national identity in the Russified Soviet Republic . He promoted the memory and care of the graves of national war heroes.

Until 1988 he participated in the movement Latvijas Tautas Fronte (Latvian Popular Front) and later in its radical wing LNNK . His candidacy as a member of parliament in the first free and penultimate elections in the LSSR in 1989 was unsuccessful, but in the 1990 elections for the Supreme Soviet he was elected as a candidate for the Tautas Fronte for the Saulkrasti district. On May 4, 1990, he voted for the declaration “To Renew Latvia's Independence”.

Dobelis was a constant member of the Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK party , which after merging with the Visu Latvijai! Founded by Raivis Dzintars as a youth organization . the designation Nacionālā apvienība "Visu Latvijai!" - "Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK" . Like the chairman of the Tautas Fronte and subsequent Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis , Dobelis did not change either in the transition from the Soviet to the 5th Saeima in 1993, or afterwards his party membership.

Dobelis is seen as an uncompromising representative of Latvian national interests, especially the non-citizen laws , which are also much criticized internationally . He described the Latvian residents with this status as "products created as a result of the Soviet occupation" that would gradually become extinct naturally.

Juris Dobelis has been awarded the Three Star Order III. Class.
