Juris Zeibārts

Juris Zeibārts (born September 18, 1959 in Riga ) is a former officer of the National Armed Forces of the Republic of Latvia with the rank of major general . Most recently he was Latvia's military representative to NATO and the EU .

Life

Juris Zeibārts was born in 1959 in Riga , the capital of what was then the Latvian SSR . After his school education, the future general first completed a teaching degree at the University of Latvia from 1977 to 1982 .

Military career

As part of the regaining of national independence in Latvia , Zeibārts joined the National Guard ( Latvian Zemessardze ) of his home country. In January 2004 he was appointed commander of the first (of a total of three) defense districts. In October 2006 he moved to the third district in the same function. On March 5, 2008, he was appointed commander of the Zemessardze . With an interruption in 2010, during which he led the Latvian contingent in Afghanistan , he remained chief of the National Guard until 2011.

On May 6, 2011 Juris Zeibārts was promoted to brigadier general. In the same year he also moved to the Armed Forces Headquarters as Deputy Chief of Staff . In December of the next year, Zeibārts took over the post of Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the Latvian Armed Forces. In this post he was promoted to major general in 2014. After almost four years as Chief of Staff, he was transferred to Brussels in August 2016, where he took over the post of military representative of his home country to NATO and the EU. When he reached retirement age, he retired in September 2019.

Private

Juris Zeibārts is married and has three grown children (one daughter and two sons). His hobbies include reading, rafting and hiking. In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks English, German and Russian.
