Justa Holz-Mänttäri

Justa Holz-Mänttäri (* 1936 in Hamburg ) is a German linguist and translator .

Life

Holz-Mänttäri is a translator for German and Finnish . She holds a PhD in philosophy and was a professor at Tampere University in Finland .

Holz-Mänttäri's best-known work, Translatory Action , was published in 1984. According to the theory of translational action developed therein, not only the translator but also the author of the source text, the client and the target audience belong to the translational process. The translator's role is to produce a target text, the purposes of which are determined in advance by all parties involved. The aim of the translation is to create a message carrier that fulfills these purposes for the target audience.
