Justitiabrunnen at Haidplatz

The Justitiabrunnen is a magnificent baroque fountain in the center of the historic old town of Regensburg . It was created in 1656 by the sculptor Leoprand Hilmer as part of the new construction of the city's water supply.

For the first time, a public fountain was built on Haidplatz in 1551. It was fed via a line that led from the western village of Dech Betten into the city. When these sources could no longer adequately supply the growing population of Regensburg, the council members decided to build a new fountain on the Eisbuckel. With the new construction of the water pipes, the existing fountain on the central Haidplatz was replaced by a much larger and more magnificent one.

In the middle of the octagonal basin stands a figure of Justitia , the personification of justice , on a stone plinth . Stretched out upwards, she holds a sword in her right hand. The figure is surrounded by a wrought iron grille with ornamental motifs from 1592, which is placed on the edge of the pool.

Until the second half of the 19th century, the Justitiabrunnen was fed with water via the baroque pipe from the Eisbuckel. A modern water supply was not built until the waterworks was built in 1875.
