history

Meiningen was granted jurisdiction by the sovereign as early as 1153 and has been the place of jurisdiction ever since. Until the opening of the justice center, the courts were in different and often changing locations in the city.

In 1993, the Free State of Thuringia acquired a 3-hectare sub-area of the 5.2-hectare main barracks in Meiningen from the federal government in order to set up an administrative center to accommodate the Meiningen judicial authorities and the police station. The main barracks was built in 1866/67 as a historicizing brick structure on a site that had previously been used as a garden at the end of the Lindenallee in the immediate vicinity of the English Garden. The outbuildings built or converted in 1872/73 and 1937 complete the ensemble. In the barracks were the 2nd Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 32 of the Prussian Army, the 14th Infantry Regiment of the Reichswehr , the Infantry Regiment Meiningen and other units of the Wehrmacht and, after the war, the 117th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 8th House of the Guard Army of the Western Group of Troops (until 1991).

In 1994, the country announced a Europe-wide architecture competition. Planning for the new justice center began in August 1996 and was taken over by KBK architects Belz, Kucher, Lutz from Stuttgart. The new buildings could be occupied from August 2000. In 2002 the new Meiningen Justice Center was awarded the Thuringian State Prize for Architecture and Urban Development . The district court has been the central enforcement court for Thuringia since 2013 .
