history

The district court of Meiningen was founded on October 1, 1879 as one of 16 district courts in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen . Until 1945 it was located in the Meiningen Regional Court building at Bismarckstrasse 14 (today Neu-Ulmer-Strasse). After it was destroyed in a bomb attack on February 23, 1945, the judicial authorities moved the district court to the former "Erbprinz" hotel in Sedanstrasse (today Ludwig-Chronegk-Strasse). When it was renamed the Meiningen District Court as part of an administrative reform and the formation of the districts in the GDR in 1952, it had to give up voluntary jurisdiction . After the German reunification in 1990, the court regained voluntary jurisdiction and was renamed “Meiningen District Court”. On June 3, 1995, there was an arson attack on the district court building, during which many files were destroyed. The district court was then moved to a city villa on Charlottenstrasse. In 2000, the move to the newly built Meiningen justice center took place on the site of the former main barracks .

As part of the reform of the district court districts in Thuringia with effect from April 1, 2006, the former district court of Schmalkalden was dissolved and assigned as a branch to the district court of Meiningen. The Schmalkalden branch was then closed on May 1, 2006.
