The Juxirkus is a non-profit children's and youth circus in Berlin-Schöneberg. About 140 children and young people train in it. Each year the young artists present a summer and a winter program with circus disciplines such as unicycling, high wire running, ball running, acrobatics and juggling. The Pestalozzi-Froebel-Haus is responsible for the youth leisure facility .

history

The Juxirkus was founded in 1988 by the Association for Social-Cultural Work e. V. founded. This makes it the first and oldest children's and youth circus in Berlin. The first public training sessions for so-called gap children took place on Winterfeldtplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg. In the year it was founded, the Juxirkus received its own tent located in Kleistpark . Clown Popov from the Moscow State Circus was the guest of honor at the first premiere of Juxirkus in December 1988 . After several moves, the Juxirkus tent has been standing on Hohenstaufenstrasse in Berlin-Schöneberg since 1990. It burned down completely in July 1991. In November of the same year, the new big top was opened at the same location.

Traveling, participating in festivals and appearing at street and company parties have been part of the Juxirkus repertoire from the very beginning. Among other things, in December 1992 youngsters from the Juxirkus performed at the 5th International Amateur Festival in Monte Carlo. In 1992, the Juxirkus expanded its range to include the JÖREN spectacle for children aged 3 and over. It was renamed the mini circus after four years and it still exists today. In 1994 there was a change of sponsor: Kiezoase Schöneberg e. V. took over the joke circus. The first project week for school classes followed in 1995. In 1996 the "Association for the Promotion of Juxirkus" was founded. In the same year, the Juxirkus took part in the first Berlin Carnival of Cultures . This was followed by regular further participation every two years. In 1998, children of the Juxirkus appeared in the television program “Kinderquatsch mit Michael” with Michael Schanze . In 2005 the Juxirkus took part in a European Juggling Convention for the first time (in Slovenia). Visits to juggling conventions have been an integral part of the annual planning ever since. In 2009 the integration group "Eiderdownen" started its training. Its members are children and young people with Down syndrome who have been part of every program since then. Two years later, a Juxirkus program was interpreted into German sign language for the first time . The financing of this offer was on shaky ground for several years. It has been carried out by the Heinz and Heide Dürr Foundation since 2013 . The midi circus has been part of the offer since 2012. The group closes the age gap between the mini circus and the main age of the main offer (10 to 18 year olds) and trains across disciplines. In 2013 the Pestalozzi-Froebel-Haus took over the sponsorship of the Juxirkus.

concept

Circus education is an example of a pedagogy that focuses on the potential and competencies of children. Children who build pyramids, who fly towards each other, who support and hold each other, learn immediately what it means to rely on and build on each other. And the pride in being able to demonstrate something is incentive enough.

The Juxirkus is a youth recreational facility with a focus on circus education. The ethical code and educational strategies of the Early Excellence approach are important principles of his work. He also sees himself as part of the Social Circus movement, which sees circus primarily as a medium for developing and strengthening personality. Therefore, the conceptual aim is not to train children and young people to become artists. There are no entrance exams or the like. Rather, anyone who wants to go to the circus can take part.

The circus pedagogical profile of Juxirkus promotes the development of children and young people in the following areas:

  • Motor skills such as flexibility, endurance, balance and coordination skills
  • Social skills such as strengthening self-confidence and self-confidence, developing initiative, a sense of responsibility and the ability to work in a team, as well as learning respect and tolerance
  • Emotional competencies such as acting out feelings, developing sensitivity, courage and imagination, reducing learning stress and exam anxiety
  • Cognitive skills such as improving perception and concentration as well as acquiring knowledge, creativity and aesthetic awareness.
