Jyotirmath or Joshimath is a small town in the Chamoli district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .
Jyotirmath is located in the Himalayas at an altitude of 1824 m above the Alaknanda River . Jyotirmath had 16,709 inhabitants at the 2011 census.
Joshimath is the northern monastic center of the four cardinal institutions of Adi Shankara .
