Jyrki Niskanen (born February 12, 1956 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Niskanen began his musical career as an entertainment musician with piano, keyboard and accordion. He studied piano at the Sibelius Academy and earned a diploma in improvisation and accompaniment. He studied singing at the Sibelius Academy and completed his training with Vera Rózsa in London and with Peter Berne in Vienna and Berlin.

Niskanen is known as a heroic tenor for his supple, strong voice with a dramatic timbre. His sonorous tenor is just as suitable for strong Wagner roles as it is for Italian operas.

Jyrki Niskanen made his debut at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 1992 , from where he was engaged directly at the Zurich Opera House as the main tenor in Beethoven's Fidelio . Since then he has appeared in the most important opera houses in Europe, America and Australia. He has, among others, all the great tenor roles of the Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner sung (Loge in Das Rheingold, Siegmund in Die Walküre, Siegfried in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung). In 1999 he appeared as Tristan in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde in the Prinzregententheater in Munich under the direction of Lorin Maazel. The love duet from Tristan and Isolde with Niskanen and Luana DeVol is included in the recording on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the opera house.
