Széchy was professor of foundation engineering and tunneling at the Technical University of Budapest and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was in charge of building the Budapest subway and rebuilt the Budapest Danube bridges that were destroyed in World War II (like the Arpad Bridge, which was planned in 1939 but not completed until 1950 because of World War II). He wrote textbooks on foundation engineering and tunneling, which were also translated into German (and English).
