Kämmerer is a German company based in Osnabrück that produces special papers . It consists of the two sister companies Kämmerer Spezialpapiere GmbH and Kämmerer Paper GmbH , which together produce at one location in the Osnabrück district of Hafen .

history

The company goes back to a fulling mill on the Hase , which was converted into a water mill by Gustav Wilhelm Quirll in 1808 . He had large quantities of rags collected, which he processed into a pulp in the mill with the help of water power. In a later step, paper was then drawn from this entirely by hand.

The rags (old clothes, sacks, etc.) first had to be completely separated by hand and freed from material such as hooks, buttons or eyes. Then the rags were further shredded and cleaned.

In 1849, the paper manufacturer Quirll invested in a modern paper machine, and the manual work involved in preparing the rags was also partially rationalized with semi-mechanical rag cutters.

In 1869, Quirll sold the Hasemühle to his cousin Wilhelm Westerkamp for reasons of age and made this a condition that he let Justus Eggemann share in the mill. The Hasemühle thus operated under the name Offene Handelsgesellschaft Westerkamp & Eggemann. However, both had no offspring.

On October 1, 1908, exactly one hundred years after it was founded, the brothers Gustav and Rudolf Kämmerer acquired the water mill with their paper production. Gustav was an engineer, Rudolf a businessman. They specialized in paper production on so-called electrical papers, which were used to insulate electrical cables. The company name was given the addition of Westerkamp & Eggemann successor, owner of the Kämmerer brothers . In April 1910, however, the new owners changed the name to Papierfabrik Brüder Kämmerer , and in July the legal form was changed to a limited partnership .

After the end of the First World War , the companies AEG and Felten & Guilleaume joined as shareholders, the Kämmerer brothers remained managing directors. The company name changed to Papierfabrik GmbH, formerly Brothers Kämmerer . A third paper machine was put into operation, and the construction of a power station was necessary to cope with the enormous increase in energy demand. A reserve turbine was installed in 1939 to ensure continuous operation of production. In 1940 a separate landing stage was put into service on the Osnabrück canal , which was opened in 1916 and which had already been applied for in 1936.

During the Second World War , forced laborers from Ukraine were employed. The operation was only slightly damaged and could therefore be continued without restriction after the end of the war in 1945.

In 1976 the company was taken over by the Finnish electrical company Ahlstrom , which decided in 2012 to separate the specialty papers division. For this purpose, the division merged with the Swedish Munksjö group. Due to the corresponding requirements of the European Commission, however, only part of the specialty paper division was allowed to be covered by this merger. Two paper machines from the Osnabrück plant were therefore taken over by the German financial investor Perusa . In 2014, a new company emerged from this, which used the old name "Kämmerer GmbH".

In 2017, Ahlstrom was able to take over another paper machine, which was transferred to a separate company called “Kämmerer Paper GmbH”. The "Kämmerer GmbH" operated from then on as "Kämmerer Spezialpapiere GmbH".
