Cheese ride

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Käsritt is a traditional folk festival in Großgartach (district of Leingarten ) in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

history

The cheese ride dates back to around 1534, when the Großgartach farmers had their right to graze at the Hipfelhof . This right was finally replaced after disputes about damage to the fields, for which the Großgartach farmers received two wheels of cheese each year, which were received by young riders at the Hipfelhof and brought on horseback to Großgartach, where the riders entered with a festival. This tradition was adhered to until 1835.

In the years after the Second World War there was an oversupply of wine in Großgartach, so that winemakers and innkeepers were looking for new sales opportunities. At the suggestion of Richard Herda-Vogel , the artist and then vice-chairman of the Großgartacher Gewerbeverein, the tradition of the cheese ride was resumed in 1950. The highlights of the festival, which is held every three years, include not only the horse parade, but also races and a pageant. In the riding competitions of the 1950s and 1960s, there were often dramatic scenes when racehorses broke out of the racetrack around the fairground. One of the attractions of the 1950s was the Nigrin stilt walker Hans Rügner , who portrayed the Stuttgart television tower during the 1958 parade .

The cheese ride is organized every three years by the Leingarten local history association. The last cheese ride took place in 2017 and is expected to take place again in autumn 2020.
